"Jos hevosta oikeasti pelottaa se ei opi"

"Snorting is important for the horse. When the horse breaths shallow and holds air in the back of its lungs it forms water and carbon dioxide. The combination of these two form poisonous carbonic acid. When the horse snorts it means that he breaths out the carbonic acid which means he breaths through the whole of his lungs. (You can compare it to the acidic feeling of having Coca Cola in your own nose.)"

Olen aina ihaillut Andrew McLeania, joten odotin kovasti tiistain 4 Your Horse -seminaaria.

Mc Lean taas toisti monta kertaa miten tärkeätä on vaikuttaa siihen mitä asioita hevosen käsittelyssä vahvistetaan.

"If the audience stops clapping and the horse stops the horse associates clapping with standing still. If  the clapping makes the horse turn and run clapping becomes a trigger for turning and running."

McLean totesi näin poikansa Warrick McLeanin ratsastamasta nuoresta hevosesta, jota iso arena jännitti kovasti:

"Today we just want to get him closer to the wall. We are not making miracles."

Tässä mielestäni Andrew McLeanin parhaat palat:

  • The horses that were bred were the ones that were best habituated to things. Now the horses are sometimes habituated to 3-5 kg of rein pressure. On the outside the horses might look normal but deep inside they are stressed and suffer from many physical illnesses.
  • FEI shifted the chase of the Titanic five years ago when the sub animal welfare committee was abandoned. Now animal welfare is in the hand of the stewards which is not good. We are all guardians of the horse. Influence of money sometimes makes us blind to horse welfare.
  • Up until 1984 dressage was light. The rein level was soft. In the old days there were no nosebands. Drop nosebands were invented in the 1950s. With some irony McLean said that  finger noseband rules are really not that good because they depend on the level of finger thickness.
  • When talking about the horse as a Happy Athlete McLean said that we don't know what horses feel. We can't actually see if horses are happy. We need to see content horses and give them consistently good habits to get a strong mental security.
  • Horses learn optimally at a certain level of stress. You need to train your horse at the right level.
  • Snorting is important for the horse. When the horse breaths shallow and holds air in the back of its lungs it forms water and carbon dioxide. The combination of these two form poisonous carbonic acid. When the horse snorts it means that he breaths out the carbonic which means he breaths through the whole of his lungs. (You can compare it to the acidic feeling of having Coca Cola in your own nose).
  • Use a long walk to relax the body. Nice and overtracking.
  • Use shorter steps as well and alter the number of steps in walk and halt. Keep asking questions. The more we ask questions the less the horse will look at the environment. If the horse is stiffer to the right use a little bit more right rein.
  • Self carriage means keeping the horses at a good speed and a good outline.
  • Ride a drunken walk from left to right to check if he walks left and right well.
  • Horses have a deep slit between the right and left hemisphere in horse brains. Right eye loads left hemisphere. Can have quite a different reaction. If there would be a bigger reaction to the right work more on that side.
  • When the horse shies, worry about the front legs. Horses don't shy with their hind legs.
  • We slowly try to achieve not force control.
  • Every once in a while give longer reins for two hoof beats so the gullet doesn't get too shut. A shut gullet creates tension. With a shut gullet (the oesophagus) there is 12-14 percent of respiratory loss in the horse. (also read this)
  • If there are problems with the right front leg there is also a problem with the left hind because they work in diagonal pairs.
  • When the shoulder of the rider goes back the inside hind goes forward. That is the right time to make the flying change because the outside hind is free.
  • Being heavy on the hand is a forestage to running. If we pull the horse in the mouth the fence becomes a trigger for running. We need ti check the stop button but don't want to kill the horses want to move.
  • If the horse leans in halt ask him to step back. Make sure you give in the halt. Make close repetitions between each learning response. Make fast halt-walk transitions without little walk in between so that the horse remembers what happened the last time.
  • In a halt from the trot the right hind should hit down directly. The halt from trot should be in three beats. If the metronome shows that the right front leg is eg. 53 beats per minute you can fasten it by pushing the horse so that it almost trots and then ask him back to walk. You should aim for 75 beats per minute. This is how we train the quick button says McLean. If you train the quick button on a young horse it is much easier to do movements such as piaffe when they are older.
  • Make at least 3 repetitions in a row and the horse is likely to get the 4th repetition right. Five repetitions is usually a bit too much.
  • When jumping practice stopping the horse straight after the fence. As soon as the feet are on the ground the horse should answer. This will reduce the running and all pony club riders should be taught this before they are let out on a cross-country field the first time.
